Football: Changes for Rhyl FC's reserve set-up

RHYL FC hope to maintain a second team next season – although it will operate differently to how it does currently.

The Lilywhites have withdrawn their reserve side from the Welsh Alliance League for 2009/10, but have applied to enter a team in the new Clwyd Reserves League.

Managing director Dave Milner explained that the club would have had to pull the reserves out of the Welsh Alliance at the end of next season anyway due to the changes being introduced in the pyramid system by the FAW.

Now the plan is to operate a youth/reserve side in the new Clwyd-run league.

"It will combine the youth players who have been so successful under John Wright with the young reserves players from last season," said Milner.

"We see it as a way of developing youth players at Rhyl at a faster rate than if they were coming through the old reserves.

"We recognise that the reserves would have had to get out of the Welsh Alliance by the end of 2009/10 anyway and had to make a decision on the best way forward."

Milner added: "Through running a combined youth/reserve side we can also offer our young players the chance to play football using Rhyl’s excellent facilities."
