RHYL RESERVES 3MOCHDRE SPORTS 1BARRITT CUP ROUND TWO
A QUARTER-FINAL home tie with Abergele Rovers awaits Rhyl Reserves after they comfortably saw off Mochdre in Saturday’s Barritt Cup round two clash at Belle Vue.
It was Rhyl’s first game in five weeks and manager Jon Stazicker was delighted with the result as well as the return from a three-month injury lay-off of inspirational skipper Scott Millington, who scored a cracker five minutes after appearing as a second half substitute.
“After having no game for over a month I was happy with the performance today,” said Stazicker. “It wasn’t the prettiest of games and Mochdre battled well, overall I’m very happy with the win and to be in the next round.”
Tom Roberts’s header from a Jack Roberts free-kick rattled the bar before the Lilywhites went ahead on 27 minutes when Mike Roose scored with a close range overhead kick.
Keiron Evans drilled just wide and Roose could have made it two prior to the break when Jack Roberts put him through but the striker blasted over.
Mochdre rallied after the break and home keeper Jamie Jones had to burst off his line to save well at the feet of Rob Knowles.
Rhyl hit back convincingly on 55 minutes when Jack Higgins was pushed over in the box and Roose converted the resulting penalty for his 18th goal this season.
Sports went close again when Joey Jennings’s 20-yard cracker was bound for the top corner but Jones pulled off a fantastic tip-over.
Then came comeback king Millington’s special moment as he whipped a 30-yard effort into the net in the 78th minute.
Mochdre did manage a consolation through Glyn Knowles, but Jack Roberts went close to a home fourth from an 18-yard free-kick, then late on keeper Carlos Martins denied Higgins when a goal looked certain.
