RUTHIN 26 DINBYCH 18
WRU DIVISION ONE NORTH
MIGHTY Ruthin maintained a long-running unbeaten streak against their Vale of Clwyd neighbours with a hard-fought victory at Cae Ddol on Saturday.
Since Dinbych joined the National League in 1991 they have yet to pick up a win over their rivals at senior level.
They were close on the opening day of the season when they came back to earn a 16-16 draw at home in a match they could and probably should have won, but it was a different matter on Saturday as Ruthin claimed the points and maintain their challenge at the top of One North.
“This was a massive win for us and a great way to start the New Year with a win over our nearest rivals,” said Ruthin captain Joe Palmer.
Fly-half Adam Robson slotted over a late penalty to ensure the win, while he also added two penalties and a conversion.
Centre Gethin Hughes crossed for a brace of tries and winger Huw Parry also went over for one, while Denbigh hit back with tries from fly-half Tony Jones and scrum-half Rob Schrimshaw, as centre Llion Edwards kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Dinbych led at the break and held Ruthin to 18-18 for a long time only for the hosts to show the greater staying power.
The win sees Ruthin move up to second place in the table – level on points with Caernarfon – and seven points shy of Nant Conwy. However, Ruthin have a game in hand over the leaders, and are still to welcome both Caernarfon and Nant to Cae Ddol for what could be crunch games.
