Motor sport: Rhyl club revs up for its 60th birthday

RHYL and District Motor Club has just celebrated 60 successful years.

On the road rally scene John Leckie and Paul Holmberg had a fine year, finishing in the top 10 in eight of 10 events they completed.

Leckie and Holmberg were second overall in the ANWCC Road Rally Championship and first non-English residents participating in the English rounds class.

Also in the ANWCC, club chairman Baz Green finished 20th and John-Paul Williams 26th, and in the Road Rally Navigator’s Championship Mike Hughes was fourth.

In the forest events, brothers Jason and Pete Nash topped their class and were fifth overall in the ANWCC.

Sheila Reynolds Jones was runner-up in the Ladies Stage Drivers Championship and club secretary Ros Goodall secured fifth in the Ladies Co-driver Championship.

In historic road rallying Allan Clews took third overall with co-driver Richard Jones scooping the novice co-drivers award.

International historic events saw Rupert Lomax and co-driver Dave Alcock, along with Rikki Proffitt, compete in the Pirelli Rally, Isle of Man International and Roger Albert Clark races.

New member Luke Francis celebrated a fantastic first year in the sport competing in the Fiesta ST and Citroen C2R2 challenges.

Andrew Hockridge scored six podium placings, including the Wales Rally GB C2R2 class, to seal second position overall in the National Citroen Challenge Trophy.

The club also organised several local events and was also active on the marshal and official side of the sport internationally.

The club championship was won by president Arthur Jones, who marshalled on 17 events during 2008.
