Rugby Union: Cartwright’s inspires Dinbych win

DINBYCH 19 COLWYN BAY 0

SWALEC DIVISION ONE NORTH

IMPRESSIVE young full-back Dafydd Cartwright bagged a brace of tries for a dominant Dinbych side which celebrated its first win of the season.

Key to victory was the home team’s aggressive defence, especially by the midfield backs and back row which stopped Bay attacks and led to countless handling errors often costing the visitors yards of territory.

Fly-half Tony Jones was the springboard of most Dinbych attacks while Rob Schrimshaw, on his 1st XV debut, gave a man of the match performance with his “will o’ the wisp” display.

On a wider scene he became only the fourth player to have represented Denbigh at football, cricket and rugby following coach Tegid Phillips, Fred Roberts and Haydn Owen.

Dinbych lost prop Paul Roberts through injury just after the start but were fortunate to have veteran replacement Jon Evans to call on to cause Bay problems in the scrums.

The hosts opened the scoring on 14 minutes when right-wing Sion Rowlands showed quick reactions when he gathered a rebound from his own kick ahead on the Bay 22 to touch down under the posts, leaving Trystan Rowlands an easy conversion.

Just before half-time Dan Burke broke on the blind side from a scrum on the Bay 22 and with Schrimshaw in support Cartwright took advantage of the overlap to notch an unconverted try near the corner.

Dinbych continued to have the better of play in the second half with good possession in lineouts and mauls.

A third try eventually came when Iwan Edwards was held up just short of the line, but the predatory Cartwright was first in support to claim the try, Rowlands improving.

On Saturday Dinbych 1sts are at Tylorstown in the Swalec Cup, the seconds entertain Shotton and the youth host Llandudno, both games kicking off 2.30 at Caeau Les Phillips.
