CHAMPIONS Prestatyn Town Reserves began their defence of the Mackenzie Jones Clwyd League Premier Division title in some style with a 4-0 victory at newly-promoted Sychdyn.
Lucas Brookes, Craig “Troy” Griffiths 2 (1 pen) and Karl Murray bagged the vital goals at Wat’s Dyke Way for a Prestatyn side seeking a third successive championship.
Abergele Rovers also started the season with a bang as they thrashed new boys Greenfield 5-1.
Tom Galvin, Sam McDougall, Nick Jones, Allan Jones and James Davies were on the mark for Gele, Lee Taylor replying for Green who lifted the Clwyd Division One title last term with a 100% record – a perfect 22 straight victories – but will discover it is a different ball game in the premier.
Two goals apiece from Martin King and Jamie Fox-Byrne earned Rhuddlan Town a 4-4 draw at Halkyn United Reserves. The visitors trailed 4-2 until Fox-Byrne pounced twice in the last 12 minutes.
Last season's basement boys Llansannan started the campaign in familiar fashion with a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Flint Town United Reserves.
In Division One, newly promoted Prestatyn Town 3rds opened with an impressive 4-1 triumph at Cerrigydrudion, Mark Hughes and Jonathan Grimley netting two apiece.
Point of Ayr overcame Rhuddlan Town Reserves 3-2 thanks to Graham Williams, Simon Bowers and Gareth Banks, but it was a bad day for Abergele Rovers Reserves as they crashed 5-1 at Shotton Steel, Nathan Parry notching their consolation.
Division Two newcomers Meliden, back in the league after a long absence, enjoyed a 2-0 success over Shotton Steel Reserves, Lee Johnson and Cy Williams finding the net.
Adam Cassidy was the day's biggest individual marksman with five goals in St Asaph's 7-0 cakewalk at Wepre Rangers, Paul Morris and Danny Morris adding singles. Bro Cernyw were 2-0 home losers against Holywell Town Reserves.
