RHYL 2NDS 23 DINBYCH 2NDS 20NORTH EAST WALESRUGBY UNION LEAGUE

DESPITE fully playing their part in an entertaining fixture at neighbours Rhyl, Dinbych had to narrowly concede defeat and with it probably their chances of Superleague qualification next season.

Dinbych’s performance was much improved, but the team may well rue the absence of a recognised goal kicker, as two missed conversions robbed them of victory.

The visitors started well, playing some attractive running rugby despite the challenge of a very wet pitch, but recently rejuvenated Rhyl defended solidly and eventually mounted a counter attack.

From a five-metre lineout number eight Tim Davies forced his way over for a try converted by Keith Gains, who also kicked a penalty.

Dinbych clawed their way back into the game before the interval. Impressive youth team captain James Rowse, playing on the flank, collected a pass on the left and ran in from the 22 to score Dinbych’s first unconverted try.

The visitors drew level after some excellent interplay between the backs released centre Alex Garvey into space to cross the Dragons line.

Rhyl took first blood in the second half with another Gains penalty, then restored their 10-point lead with a Geezer Davies try. Gains converted, then added three more points to make it 23-10.

Dinbych needed two converted tries to win and made a manful attempt.

The pack worked hard in the set pieces and their scrum held up well to the considerably heavier Rhyl forwards.

The backs also threatened throughout and were well marshalled by young scrum-half Rob Schrimshaw, making his senior debut.

Dinbych kept running the ball at Rhyl, and eventually were rewarded with a penalty landed by Andy Holt.

With minutes remaining Garvey powered through two defenders to cross under the posts, Holt’s extras closing the scores to 23-20, but Dinbych were unable to force the win.

The Seconds will aim to finish the season with pride with two games remaining, starting with Caer Borderers at Caeau Les Phillips on Saturday (2.30pm).
