JEANNIE Gillespie was the star with four goals as Denbigh stormed to a well-deserved maiden victory in this friendly at Buckley.

On five minutes Kelly Jones picked up the ball in midfield and threaded one through to an alert Manon Evans who ran on and slotted past the home keeper with glee.

After withstanding some pressure the visitors doubled their advantage on 25 minutes when Gillespie ran beyond two before firing into the corner.

The second stanza saw a more determined Buckley side, but Val Williams was imperious between the sticks.

On the hour, Gillespie netted with a great lob and five minutes later she completed a hat-trick.

It was 5-0 on 69 minutes when player of the match Gillespie hit a hopeful ball towards goal which caught the home keeper napping.

The sixth came on 88 minutes, a great individual effort from speedster Laura Jones, who ran from her own half and walked the ball into the net to the delight of the following Denbigh contingent.

“We were looking for a clean sheet and maybe a one-nil, so to get six was amazing,” said Denbigh manager Sharon Clayton. “We played lovely football and the early goal settled us and gave us confidence. Our fitness told and it showed how important this aspect of the game is.”
