RUTHIN’S Hugh Hunter is battling for top honours in Saturday’s GON Cambrian Rally which starts and finishes in Llandudno.
He is one of three competitors separated by only three points at the top of the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association national championship – and the Cambrian is the final round.
Hunter, in his Ford Focus World Rally Car (WRC) will be hoping to win the event to take the title from championship leader Will Nicholls in a Subaru Impreza WRC and second-placed Damian Cole in a Hyundai Accent WRC.
The rally will be led away from the start on Llandudno promenade at 8am by the 1400cc cars including car 221, the BL Mini of Rob Jones from Mochdre co-driven by Peter Buckley from Llandudno Junction.
It will be the car’s 21st consecutive outing in the event, believed to be a record!
And other Denbighshire competitors to look out for are Luke Francis from Rhuddlan in a Ford Fiesta ST, and Rhyl Motor Club’s Jason Nash in a Ford Escort Mark 2.
Spectators are welcome to view the event but are urged to use the following designated viewing points and to comply with safety instructions from marshalls:
Clocaenog East – first car due at 9.18am and 1.43pm, and Clocaenog Main first car due at 9.36am and 2pm. Spectator entrance is on the B5105 between Cerrigydrudion and Ruthin map ref 116/048 518
Penmachno North – first car due at 11.22am. There is no access to the stage through Penmachno or the Woollen Mill. All spectators must approach using the A470 and the yellow road North of Penmachno. There is excellent viewing within the quarry air in a banked arena.
