Hockey: First home fixture brings a welcome Rhyl win

NORTH WEST MEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

AFTER drawing their opening game at Deeside Ramblers 4-4, Rhyl’s first home fixture of the season brought a welcome victory.

Unbeaten at St Asaph all of last season, the coast side maintained their impressive run with goals coming from youngster Mikey Pennington and Christian Nicholson.

Chester started briskly but it was Rhyl who opened the scoring after catching the visitors on the break.

A nice passing move started with Andy Pierce feeding the ball to the lively Ryan Corner, whom in turn played in Iain Bennett.

Unselfishly Bennett squared across goal to young Pennington who put the ball in from an unmarked position at the far post.

Rhyl’s second was a carbon copy, this time Pierce releasing Nicholson for a tap-in in the same position Pennington found himself in previously.

In a fiery game Corner was on the receiving end of two yellow cards and Bennett one, with one Chester player also spending time on the sidelines.

Chester replied from a short corner which led to a frantic final 15 minutes, but Rhyl had the mettle to hold on.
