Running: Caerwys runner wins in veteran class

A COLD wind and fine rain failed to prevent Prestatyn Running Club’s Irene Taylor shining in last week’s Rhyl Sun Centre 5k race.

Irene, 58, from Caerwys, who only recently joined the club, won the L55 category in the open race and North Wales championship.

Club placings: 18 Chris Kelly 18.13, 19 Matt Sims 18.16, 20 George Nicholls 18.23 (3rd M35 in open race), 23 Gareth Brandrick 18.37, 24 Tom Laugharne 18.39 (3rd U17 in open and closed races), 29 Gareth Bailey 19.07 (3rd U20 in champs), 41 Arwel Jones 19.56, 51 Aaron Aspinall 20.28, 52 Jo McDonough 20.30 (1st senior lady in open race), 60 Paul Brandrick 20.59, 69 Gareth Hughes 21.53 (2nd M60 in open race), 83 Brenda Tiedtke 22.55 (2nd L45 in open race), 84 Mike Doolan 22.56, 101 Sharon Hulett 25.55, 102 Julie Logan 26.01, 107 Tracy Howarth 28.15, 109 Irene Taylor (1st L55 in both sections), 115 Diane Williams 33.55, 117 Wendy Wood 33.55.

Ladies captain Glenda Davies was second in the L45 class in the Mynydd Myfyr hill race at Trefonen, near Oswestry. She finished in 31.26, two minutes faster than last year despite blustery conditions.

The club’s oldest member, 80-year-old Eddie Naisby of Clocaenog, clocked an outstanding 54.33 in Sunday’s Mersey Tunnel 10k.
