Seahorses scuppered
RUTHIN 17 COLWYN BAY 12
WRU DIVISION ONE NORTH
DESPITE Colwyn Bay’s poor start to the season this was always going to be a tough match with the Seahorses seeking revenge for their defeat by Ruthin in May’s North Wales Cup final.
The hosts still had key players injured but with captain Joe Palmer and centre Gethin Hughes back in the side the Vale valiants started positively, putting pressure on Colwyn from the kick-off.
The scrum was more solid than at Nant Conwy the previous week but Ruthin failed to make the most of early opportunities and an encouraging start was dampened when second row Chris Davies was sin-binned – the first of seven yellow cards to be issued.
During a spell where fly-half James Plant and Palmer also received yellows, Bay took advantage with Ashley James landing two penalties.
Although having only 13 men Ruthin were camping on the visitors’ try line and shortly after Plant came back on, scrum-half Will Davies pounced for a try.
Plant added the extras, then Kyle Davies scored a further Ruthin try along the wing. Bay replied with a third James penalty making it 12-9 at the interval.
In the second half Ruthin continued to attack with good play by flanker Clwyd Jones and a solid performance from 18-year-old Will Davies.
However, after Jones was sent to the sidelines the Bay pulled level with a fourth James posts-splitter. Although Colwyn looked dangerous on the break, Ruthin’s defence stayed solid and a nicely worked try by Palmer on the hour sealed the win.
This Saturday sees Ruthin play home to Briton Ferry in the Swalec Welsh Cup second round.
