Rugby Union: A dazzling display from Ruthin

LLANGEFNI 20 RUTHIN 36

SWALEC DIVISION ONE NORTH

A POWER-PACKED first half performance enabled Ruthin to pile up the necessary points to bring them victory at Cae Smyrna.

Llangefni opened the scoring early when full-back Arwel Roberts won the race to touch down.

From thereon in Ruthin dazzled, showing flair, speed and an understanding of the game which saw them successfully score four tries, each one converted, to secure their bonus point within 40 minutes.

After 20 minutes a skied ball was picked up by full-back Gethin Hughes who combined with scrum-half Rhys Hughes and centre Steffan Morgan to deliver to centre Paolo Tardivel who scored Ruthin’s first touchdown, converted by Adam Robson.

Within five minutes winger Kyle Davies was fed the egg well within Ruthin’s own half, twice kicked the ball forward past two Llangefni players, collected and dodged a further three opponents to score a great try, Robson again improving.

Ruthin then added the best try of the match when Robson passed wide to Morgan who flicked the ball back to Gethin Hughes and he sped through the Cefni defence to ground under the posts.

Five minutes later Robson set up Gethin Hughes who again ran over to get the bonus point try. Two Robson post-splitters made it 28-8 at half time.

The Anglesey side were more dominant in the second half, but an offside infringement enabled Robson to claim another penalty.

The first try of the half went to the islanders, wing William Owen drawing in the Ruthin defence to set up full-back Roberts to score his second touchdown which he improved himself.

Ruthin quickly responded, Lee Pope and Joe Palmer enabling wing Huw Parry to go over.

Llangefni responded with a late try from David Williams, but this was Ruthin’s afternoon.

Ruthin are home to Mold this Saturday (2.30pm).
