Rugby Union: Rhyl youngsters celebrate taking crown

WREXHAM YOUTH 13 RHYL YOUTH 36

RHYL completed their league fixtures with a solid win away against runners- up Wrexham.

The young Dragons have lost only one game this season and that was the opener at home to Wrexham, making Saturday’s win that much enjoyable.

The result also means Rhyl have managed to put more than 30 points on every team in the league.

Head coach Phil Blakoe brought in experienced coaches Simon Woods (backs) and Lee Blackmore (forwards) after that first defeat to Wrexham, and the team have gone from strength to strength.

They now play Nant Conwy in the semi-final of the North Wales Cup next Saturday and on May 9 travel to South Wales to take on the winners of Merthyr v Carmarthen Quins in the semi-final of the Champion of Champions Welsh Cup.

Captain Mike Hall said he was proud of all the lads who have played this season and winning the league was a real squad effort with all 35 players involved.

Head coach Blakoe thanked everyone at the club for their support, adding these lads have put Rhyl on the rugby map of Wales with teams from the south now sitting up and taking notice of what talented rugby players are being produced. The team is sponsored by Thorncliffe Building Supplies.
