Cricket: Winning draw for Denbigh at Corwen

CORWEN 75-5 DENBIGH 200-7 dec

NORTH WALES LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

RAIN denied Denbigh victory over the winless bottom side but Ben Wilcox-Jones’ men are now just three points off the promotion places after picking up a winning draw.

Put into bat, the visitors lost Gerallt Lyall early, bowled by Josh Maynard for a duck, but James Hobbs and Stuart Griffiths then put together a century stand for the second wicket.

Hobbs struck 81 and Griffiths 59 as Denbigh reached 200 for seven off 45 overs before declaring. Maynard finished with four for 53 and Will Roberts two for 46.

Over tea, the weather broke and the rain began although it was relatively fine and so both teams took to the field.

Corwen’s reply did not begin well with Nathan Aldridge falling lbw to Rob Schrimshaw for three and Mark Wyeth bowled by Alec Lewis for seven. Maynard perished three balls later for 0, also bowled by Lewis.

This brought together Matthew Duckworth and Steve Swygart and they began some form of recovery before the latter was caught behind for 13.

Duncan Roberts and Duckworth batted on determinedly before the skipper was trapped lbw for 24 by David Schrimshaw from a ball that kept low.

Corwen were 75 for five when rain caused the match to be abandoned.
