PROTESTORS demanding a new bypass to reduce the amount of traffic in St Asaph have presented a "record-breaking" petition to council leaders.
Around seven placard-bearing demonstrators appeared in the Denbighshire County Council chamber, Ruthin, last Tuesday, to witness the handing over of the 5,200 signature document. There are thought to be less than 4,000 permanent residents in the town.
Former St Asaph mayor Bill Cowie presented the demands on behalf of current St Asaph mayor, Elsie Powell.
"There are 5,200 signatures supporting the need for a north south relief road," he said. "And we believe this is the largest ever petition presented to Denbighshire County Council.
"We also have the support of other town councils including Denbigh, Trefnant and Rhyl.
"It is requesting that an in-depth feasibility study is made and its findings implemented in the Local Development Plan."
Protesters say a bypass is needed because of the danger caused by heavy vehicles thundering along High Street.
