A PUPIL from Ysgol Dinas Brân, Llangollen has returned from a trip to Strasbourg after being named one of two UK finalists in a prestigious competition arranged by the European Commission.
David Tuxworth, a Year 13 student, was awarded the runner-up prize in the UK in the Development Youth Prize, a competition open to young people aged between 16-18 from around Europe.
Participants were invited to submit a design or a piece of artwork which best highlighted the impact of environmental change on developing countries – it was hoped their creative vision could help raise awareness among fellow pupils, teachers, families and others.
David was awarded a prize as a runner-up by Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, for his multimedia presentation on “Water – An Essential Resource”.
His submission, along with finalists from the 26 other EU member states, was viewed by the president of the African Union and will be included in a book and series of postcards to be published by the Commissioner.
The winners (one from each member state), along with their teachers, will be going to an African developing state with Commissioner Michel at the beginning of 2009.
