Clwyd children to offer Llangollen goodwill message

CHILDREN from across Clwyd will be the latest Llangollen recruits to help read the town’s annual message of goodwill at the International Eisteddfod next week.

The speech, which has been delivered by schoolchildren since 1952, preaches peace and goodwill among nations and is traditionally used to open the summer ceremony on the International Children’s Day, held this year on July 8.

"In many ways the Children’s Day is the kingpin and foundation block for everything that Llangollen stands for," said Mervyn Cousins, Llangollen Executive Director.

"It’s all about togetherness, inclusiveness, and unity. It’s always a joyful and life- affirming experience that never fails to grab you by the heartstrings and reaffirm your commitment to this truly wonderful festival."

Although the words in the message change each year, the main themes have remained the same after having help over five decades of Eisteddfodau.

Traditionally, the speech has been delivered by individual schoolchildren from Llangollen but this year will see students from ten schools from around North Wales taking part in proceedings, an arrangement which organisers say is rewarding for both the participants and audience.

The Message of Peace and Goodwill will be followed by a children’s parade through the streets of the town, as well as entertainment from young musicians from as far afield as Algeria, South Africa, Thailand and Tobago in an international effort to support the speech.
