Llanrhaeadr actor to play Wil Cwac Cwac

ACLWYDIAN actor has been lined up to play a Welsh children’s legend in a play being launched in the region’s theatres later this autumn.

Llanrhaeadr local Iwan Charles will be playing Wil Cwac Cwac in an adaptation of Llyfr Mawr y Plant, a Welsh-language children’s classic, based on the books by Jenny Thomas and J.O Williams.

"It’s really exciting, but I’m also a bit nervous. The character of Wil Cwac Cwac is a bit of a national icon isn’t he?" he said.

"I’m just hoping I can do the character justice, or everyone will be baying for my blood!"

The play, produced by Theatr Bara Caws, in partnership with Theatr Gwynedd and Galeri, will be visiting theatres around the country, including Rhyl’s Pavilion Theatre, from October 4. In the production, Charles will be working alongside other well-known Welsh entertainers, including comedian Eilir Jones, who plays the part of Twm Larwm.

Director Tony Llywelyn said that in choosing Charles for the part, he had to find an actor whose singing abilities would compliment the play’s score.

"When casting we had to consider and chose actors with strong vocal ability along with acting talent. I’m very happy with the cast. We have a broad range of personalities, exactly like the characters in the book he said.

Llyfr Mawr y Plant will be shown at Rhyl’s Pavilion Theatre from Wednesday October 15 to Saturday, October 18. For more details call the theatre’s box office on 01745 330000.
