Bala elderly to benefit from £8.6m care investment

THE elderly in Bala are to benefit from an £8.6m investment as 30 new purpose-built extra care housing units are to be built in the town.

Gwynedd Council has secured the cash from the Welsh Assembly Government and the mixture of state-of-the-art one and two-bedroomed units will be built at Cysgod y Coleg Y Bala next year or in 2010.

The project is being carried out by the council in partnership with Tai Clwyd Housing Association and the units will all include on-site care and specially-designed facilities to ensure all residents can live safely and independently.

Gwynedd Council's strategic director for care Dafydd P Lewis said: "We are very pleased to hear of the announcement, which will bring significant benefit for Bala. I look forward to the building work starting on the project as soon as possible and I am confident that these developments will make a real difference to the quality of the services on offer for older people."

Communal facilities in the development may include a restaurant, activity room, hairdresser, small shop and guest rooms.
