Rhyl kids hop on cooking bus

JUNIOR chefs in Rhyl will have the opportunity to learn from culinary masters when the cooking bus comes to town this month.

The giant, hi-tech articulated lorry opens out into a spectacular purpose-built kitchen and classroom where qualified food teachers give pupils, teachers and the community a taste of quality cooking.

Pupils at Ysgol Llewelyn will be among those able to climb aboard for lessons under the expert eye of an advisory teacher.

There will also be training for the teachers and some members of the wider school community and parents so they can continue helping youngsters cook with confidence.

Pupils will also cover key aspects of food education including nutrition, food safety and hygiene and food preparation skills.

Education minister Jane Hutt said: “The Cooking Bus has proved to be a big hit with children across Wales.

“We know that children are more likely to eat healthy food if they play a part in making it and the menu options are fun and attractive. I am delighted with the success of the Cooking Bus.”

The Cooking Bus targets primary schools in Communities First areas. Some of the dishes that could be made onboard the bus during this visit include roast vegetable couscous salad, vegetable samosas, lunchbox wraps, fresh fruit salad and herby cheese scones.

Pupils also cover key aspects of food education including nutrition, food safety and hygiene and food preparation skills. The core of all lessons is hands-on cooking.
