POLICE in Conwy and Denbighshire are warning shoppers to be extra cautious following a number of incidents of pick-pocketing and theft.
From January to May, 23 people have reported being a victim of personal theft across Denbighshire and Conwy. These incidents have occurred in supermarkets as well as charity shops, clothing and shoe stores and even at a tanning salon.
Out of the 23 thefts, by far the most common items taken were purses and handbags which have been left unattended in shopping trolleys. Other items include, debit cards, mobile phones and cash.
Although victims of pick-pocketing and street theft can be male or female, all 23 victims were female with the majority of them being over 60 years old.
Inspector Jonny Hill, Community Safety for Denbighshire and Conwy warns shoppers not to leave bags and purses unattended in shopping trolleys.
He said: “Store security guards regularly approach shoppers who leave their handbags in trolleys whilst looking at the shelves; it only takes a second for someone to walk past and remove a purse. It could be 10 minutes or more before they find it missing at the till.”
A spokesperson said: “It’s always best practice to use indoor cash machines where possible and ensure you have safely tucked your money away before going outside.”
Police are issuing the following advice;
Don’t leave you handbag unattended on your trolley at any time.
Keep your shopping bags zipped.
Don’t worry about being unhelpful if anyone asks for change; you’re at your most vulnerable when you have you’re purse or wallet open.
Ensure cash and cards are put away before leaving banks and shops.
Be aware of your surroundings and who is near you.
Ensure handbags are closed and the flap against your body.
Keep credit cards and cheque books separate.
