ONE of Rhyl’s grand old buildings is being given a new lease of life as a spectacular venue for live music.
Frames pool and snooker hall on the High Street, in days gone by the Plaza Cinema, has undergone an extensive programme of refurbishment and tidying and will soon relaunch as Rhyl’s biggest music showcase.
Pool and snooker will still be available in the building, which is to be named Venue4Events.
Joey Brownley, one of Venue4Events directors, said: “We realised when we took over the lease that there was still a lot of character in the building and so every step we’ve taken in the refurbishment has had the underlying objective of preserving and enhancing the original features.”
Features such as ceiling mouldings, interior doors and the old flight of stairs leading to the cinema’s interior have all been cleaned and tidied to allow people with fond memories of the cinema to enjoy them once more.
Joey added: “As the work has progressed we have come to realise just how much love for the building still remains with the public and we regularly get people who would never normally set foot in a snooker hall coming in to enjoy an unashamed trip down memory lane.
“Talking to them has made us realise just how much people enjoy nostalgia and so we have set up a couple of memory walls that are packed with old photographs of the town and its people and we also show a DVD that was shot on cine film at Rhyl Fairground in 1962.”
Work is still in progress and no acts have yet been booked to appear at Venue4Events.
Organiser Steve Rastin said: “Until we have the official go ahead for the upstairs performance area we won’t be billing anything.
“We’ve been in this position before when we’ve got a date pencilled in and then everything just falls apart.”
