THE new St Asaph Multi Use Games Area was officially opened last week on Roe Plas.
Mayor Elsie Powell unveiled the MUGA on National Play Day, when there were numerous opportunities for children to take part in a range of games and sports.
Young internationals and representative players from local sporting clubs as role models were in attendance and demonstrations took place with the opportunity to “try your hand” at a new sport.
Those taking part were given free fruit and bottled water donated by Asda and Decantae, and the council/community room was open for teas and coffees for parents and visitors.
Cllr Elsie Powell spoke to the Visitor this week about the opening.
“It was a very successful day and we had a good number of children taking part in the various events, including mini Olympics, cricket, football, river dipping and others activities.
“All the children who took part were presented with a medal on a ribbon commemorating the opening of the MUGA on behalf of St Asaph Town Council.
“It is a wonderful facility that has been provided for St Asaph by the town council with the help of a grant from WREN, a plaque to this effect was unveiled.”
The Lord Lt of the County and his wife attended, as did the chairman of Denbighshire County Council, and his wife.
Also there were Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones and other invited guests who had helped with support for the MUGA.
The free play scheme leaders helped with the activities and the scheme will continue for the remainder of the school summer holidays on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm.
If this scheme is a success, the town council hopes to put it on during other school holidays.
