Mindless vandals set fire to St Asaph playground

VANDALS have smashed up and set fire to a new £80,000 playground in St Asaph.

Less than four weeks after the riverside grounds were opened they have suffered "mindless vandalism", denying the children one of their favourite pieces of equipment.

The large basket swing was set on fire last week, leaving nothing but charred remains. The support ring for the basket has also been virtually destroyed, as has the rubber safety flooring.

St Asaph councillor Denise Hodgkinson blasted the yobs this week.

"Such a destructive act of stupidity has upset many of the youngsters, who selected the equipment and really enjoyed using the communal basket swing, where they could sit and chat," she said.

"Hopefully, police will apprehend the culprit(s) and they will be dealt with severely."

Mayor Elsie Powell reinforced Cllr’s Hodgkinson’s comments, and added: "The children’s favourite piece of equipment was set on fire and damaged beyond repair. It was mindless vandalism.

"Many children are so disappointed that the large basket type swing, which would take several children at one time, was ruined and can not be used during the school holidays.

"The charred remains had to be taken down for safety reasons.

"The police are involved and are working on the case. It is hoped to replace the equipment as soon as possible, but because it has to go through the insurance process it may take time."

"Why anyone can cause such damage to something that gives so much pleasure to the children is incomprehensible."

Despite the damage, many visitors are continuing to use the park and the other facilities on offer.

Inspector Steve Williams told the Visitor: "The matter is under investigation, but the time span as to when it happened is still unclear. It is extremely disappointing that the stupidity of some people has a detrimental affect on facilities that the community have called for."

Insp Williams is currently reviewing the policing strategy in all areas and will be aiming to meet with local councillors to discuss the way forward.
