Man killed by train near Prestatyn railway station

BRITISH Transport Police has launched an investigation after a man was killed when he was hit by a train near Prestatyn station.

The man has not been named but he is said to have been in his mid-20s and local to the area

The incident happened on Friday night on the North Wales coast railway line at the bottom of Ceg-y-Ffordd which is just off Ffordd Penrhwylfa which carries a road bridge over the line.

There is a locked gate at the bottom of Ceg-y-Ffordd behind which is a walkway which crosses the line but is not a public access.

A spokesman for Arriva trains said yesterday: "This incident involved the 22.07pm service from Llandudno Junction to the station in Chester.

"About 10.30pm Network Rail received a report from the driver that he had hit someone on the Rhyl side of Prestatyn station.

"At 23.40 British Transport Police confirmed there was a fatality.

"As part of the investigation the line was closed and was fully re-opened about 3am on Saturday morning.

"During that time one service was allowed to go through under caution, but at that time of the morning there were very few services on the line."

Police do not believe the death was suspicious.

North east Wales coroner John Hughes has been advised of the death and a post mortem may be carried out today.
