Warning over scrap metal thefts

POLICE in south Denbighshire are asking the public to stay vigilant in the vale after a spate of scrap metal thefts this week.

Inspector Mike Hughes, of the South Denbighshire Division of North Wales Police, says that farms in particular are being targeted by thieves, with engine parts, catalytic converters and farming equipment high on their shopping list.

"There has been an upsurge in scrap metal theft in the past few days, especially in Llanarmon, Grianrhyd and other rural areas" he said.

"In the past it wasn’t really profitable for criminals to steal scrap metal, but thanks to a massive increase in the cost of metal globally this is no longer the case".

North Wales Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale also said that the rise in metal theft was also being reflected across North Wales.

Police have reported several incidents this week of people acting suspiciously at rural locations across the county, and have warned that gangs using blue and white panel vans and a Land Rover Discovery may be involved in the scrap scrounging.

"I ask that anyone who sees people hanging around and doesn’t seem to be there for any good reason to not just assume they are there legitimately. If you have any suspicions at all, please report them to us as soon as you can" Mike added.

If you are suspicious about scrap metal theft in the area, please contact North Wales Police on 0845 607 1002, or in Welsh on 0845 607 1001.
