The Wanted ready to create a stir at Rhyl Pavilion

A NUMBER one debut single, nine million YouTube hits, 520,000 Facebook fans and an X-Factor appearance. It’s hardly been an All Time Low for breakthrough boy band and new national heart-throbs The Wanted.

Tom Parker, Siva Kaneswaran, Max George, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes are far from your stereotypical boy band. There's a rough and tumble energy and down to earth laddishness about them when they’re together which makes it very clear they’re not just band mates on the verge of pop greatness, they’re great mates.

"We’re just five ordinary guys who like having a laugh," says baby-faced 17- year-old Nathan, the youngest in the band. "We’re all very different personalities and come from all over the UK, but somehow it works."

Max, who once found fame as part of boy band Avenue, said: "Siva’s pretty laid back and really ‘Zen’, Jay’s a bit of an indie kid and then Nathan – you think he’s all young and cute but actually he’s really dry and sarcastic.

"Oh yeah, and Tom – he’s just a lad from Bolton!"" says Max who once found fame as part of the boyband Avenue, who were controversially kicked out of the third series of X-Factor, having made it to Louis Walsh's house.

For the past few months they have been living together in a ramshackle bachelor’s pad in South London. Tellingly, they invested in the important stuff like a football table before moving on to boring things like furniture and curtains.

"Got a dart board on the door, fridge full of beer, freezer full of pizzas. What more do you need?" grinned Tom.

The band was formed through an audition process by Jayne Collins, the same woman who put together The Saturdays, and they have already been working alongside some of the best names in the business, such as Steve Mac, Wayne Hector and Guy Chambers.

"I’m a huge fan of All Time Low," says Max of the band’s debut single which was written by Mac and Hector.

"Working with Guy was pretty daunting, he’s a bit of a legend," adds Siva.

Chambers helped record Let’s Get Ugly, which features on the album. The track uses a fresh blend of a young Robbie Williams swagger and a dirty bass line to create an original mix of modern pop.

"I’d say it was edgy pop, there’s a bit of rock and a bit of indie in there too," says Jay. "It’s certainly not your usual boy band stuff."

"I love that track, that’s where we got the name The Wanted from," says Tom. "It came out of the whole Wild West vibe of that song, and just sounds cool, not too cheesy," adds Nathan. "We’ve got no time for cheese around here!"

The Wanted perform at Rhyl Pavilion on March 26. Fans queued out of the door on the day of release to get a ticket, so if you want to get one you’ll need to be quick.
